Corrosion Resistant Disc Springs

Corrosion Resistant Materials
A disc spring material with a high nickel alloy content is considered corrosion-resistant due to the austenitic crystal lattice in its original state. The mixed crystal formation provides the strength in corrosion resistant disc spring material, along with cold working during rolling (see DIN 17 224) and precipitation hardening (X 7 CrNiAl 17 7). The corrosion resistant material is unable to be martempered or austempered like standard disc spring materials. The maximum disc spring material thickness has narrow limits set due to the certain degree of cold working the material. In addition, the strength acquired by cold rolling is lost at temperatures above + 200 °C, but use of corrosion resistant disc spring materials at extremely low temperatures is achievable.


Gas spring working principle

A gas filled spring consists of a precision rod attached to a piston moving within a sealed cylinder containing nitrogen at high pressure.  As the piston rod is introduced into the cylinder (compression stroke), the internal pressure increases according to the volume of gas displaced buy the rod.  Output forces are the result of the differential between the pressure in the cylinder and atmospheric pressure outside the cylinder acting on the cross-section of the rod.  This increase in Force or K-Factor is normally between 5% - 50%.  In comparison to mechanical springs, gas springs are almost constant force.


Economical solutions for less critical applications

Belleville washers, manufactured from steel strip, are not scragged (pre-stressed) during the manufacturing process and the inside and outside diameters of the disc spring are not machined.

Belleville washers are a more economical and less precise form of conical disc spring, best used for static applications where some setting and/or loss of force can be tolerated.


How to adjust the force on a gas spring with an IGS Side Release Valve

The IGS Side Release Valve can be found on the Euroline range of gas springs. It can also be found on custom made gas springs where a SRV was specified.

You should keep in mind that this type of release can also be activated by other persons, therefore it is suitable for prototypes or when the gas spring is fitted in an area which cannot be easily accessed by the end user.

Can do:

Try to use ball joints to help avoid side load forces. If eyes or fork clevises are used, ensure a loose fit to allow for lateral movement.
Use standard gas springs rod down, i.e. the spring should be mounted so that it spends most time in a rod down position, within 60° of vertical, thus ensuring the seal stays lubricated. For tension springs the exact opposite is true, i.e. use rod up. Once installed, test at least every three months.
