Rigid in Compression Lockable Gas Springs

These are similar to the rigid in tension locking springs with oil on both sides of the piston.Conversely when a tensile force is applied, the gas in the nose section will compress permitting a small amount of movement but again, since the oil in the closed end cannot expand, the movement is less than that experienced with a flexible locking spring. When a compressive load is applied to the locked rod, the oil between the piston and the closed end of the tube will not compress and the rod cannot move.However, in the case of a rigid in compression spring the oil is contained in the closed end of the tube and a floating piston retains the gas in the nose bearing end chamber.

Disc Spring-Corrosion Protection

 disc springs are capable of enduring rigorous loads at very high stress levels. In addition, the table details their respective process and comparative corrosion resistance when exposed to a salt spray test per the requirements of DIN 50 021.At such levels, it is very critical to protect the disc springs from chemical or electrochemical corrosion. Please reference for a list of corrosion resistant surface coatings.  Some disc spring applications require thicker surface coatings, For example, it is possible to achieve a surface coating thickness up to 50 μm with mechanical galvanizing and chemical nickel-plating. The surface coating thickness listed in the table for galvanizing and nickel-plating are illustration of realistic protection values. When designing disc springs stacks, lateral surface issues with the coatings are possible where relative movement between the springs may occur.

High Temperature Disc Springs

High Temperature Materials

Disc springs functioning at high temperatures use a variety of precipitation-hardened materials from the nickel-base alloys group. The high temperature materials are vastly ductile and exhibit very high fatigue strength. The lower tensile strength and adverse elastic limit – tensile strength ratio are important when designing disc springs made of high temperature material. If ignored, a high degree of setting loss is potential. An upper operating temperature limit is not viable to indicate and the overall spring height lessens under load due to creep. The tangible level of creep is a function of temperature, time and stress. For example, a disc spring can be used at higher temperatures if either a lower load is applied or the duration at the higher temperature is minimal. As a result, the values are valuable references for the maximum temperatures at which the disc springs will demonstrate the same performance as at room temperature. The modulus of elasticity is somewhat lower at the upper temperature limit of the material. Therefore, disc springs produced with thermally stable materials can be used at temperatures approximately 150 °C higher than those acknowledged . High temperature materials generally have long lead times from the steel mills and are typically very expensive. Nimonic 90 is better suited for extremely high temperatures than Inconel X 750 (or Inconel 718).

Thermally Stable Disc Springs

Martempered steels are generally thermally stable disc spring materials due to their high alloy content. The thermally stable disc spring material was exposed to high temperatures for a long length of time in order to obtain the higher operating temperatures . In contrast to standard disc spring materials, martempered steels display a lower level of creep at the higher temperature ranges.  The modulus of elasticity is very critical during disc spring design, since it decreases as the temperature ascends and increases as the temperature descends.In addition, the disc springs may be exposed, for brief moments (roughly about 1 hour), to temperatures approximately 100 °C higher than those listed without disturbing their properties. Hence, disc springs will exhibit a lower force at greater than room temperatures and a higher force at lesser than room temperatures. Brittle fracture is probable during untimely failures for disc springs manufactured with thermally stable materials.
